Q. I have received an Adobe pdf file and can’t open it. What can I do?

A. Download Adobe pdf reader. See our downloads section.

Q. I keep getting annoying pop up windows when I go on the internet. Can I do anything about this?

A. Ideally you should contact your system administrator or get professional outside help. For single users not on a network and with single drives you could switch off windows messaging or try Spybot (See downloads) or Lavasofts Adaware (see downloads)

Q. What should I consider when buying a new computer?

A. Try to avoid bargain basement systems. Nobody can replace lost data without backups. Laboratory drive analysis is expensive and not always successful. Try to purchase a system which incorporates some level of service agreement not just for the hardware (remember that is the cheap part) but for the implementation.

Q. What should I consider when setting up an I.T. system in my practice?

A. Backup. Does not need to be expensive. Does need to be procedureal and verifyable.

  • Antivirus and update licence on all systems.
  • Anti-spyware software with updates on all systems.
  • Firewall (preferably hardware based)
  • System support.
  • Cabled network. Wireless is a neat solution if implemented correctly but needs to be revised frequently for security loopholes as new technologies emerge.
